Step 1: The Therapist/Coach Does a Self-Assessment

Before agreeing to work with clients, T/Cs are encouraged to assess their own credentials to ensure that they can appreciate the context in which the client will be working toward a goal. Relevant questions might be: If working with an athlete, how much do you, the T/C, need to know about athletic coaching, specific sports, and sports psychology in general, or is it better to work in tandem with an athletic coach? If assisting an executive, is it expected that you understand leadership, decision-making practices, and relevant psychological measurements? If offering services to addicted persons, do you understand how addiction and relapse are multi-determined? Since many clients of all types may require processing of traumatic memories that interfere with meeting their goals, are you sufficiently familiar with how the past meddles with the present and future and how it cannot be simply willed away? Is a trauma background also necessary for effective EFT targeting of triggers? Space does not allow for responses to these questions; they are raised only to point out that effective performance coaching may require specialty knowledge, training, and experience. “Not practicing outside one’s area of competence” is a key ethical guideline in mental health professions.

Pay attention to your own level of confidence and optimism as a T/C EFT practitioner. It may be already obvious that this model can be used by the T/C to develop positive attitudes and confidence in the use of EFT. The EFT practitioner is encouraged to practice resilience and other virtues that can help when facing the criticisms, doubts, and skepticism that traditional coaches and potential clients have been known to exhibit.
